Joan was inspired by her trip to England in 2002. Can you tell?

Traditionally the Marches are the borderlands between England and Wales. Places where people and cultures merged.  Ideas and ways of working were exchanged, thoughts and words, tools and styles.  The independent folk who lived along these borders created a way of life that celebrated the best of both worlds.

Borders. Frontiers. Imaginary lines that can be crossed, perhaps marked out by stones in a field, perhaps by the horizon of the hills. Borders can hold us back, or they can challenge us to cross over. Those who live along the borders, along the Marches, are more than the sum of their cultures, they are a people apart.

They are the Marcher folk.

There are Marches in our minds as well.  Ways of working, ways of thinking. Styles that develop in tradition and do not change.  The borders between styles, the fusion of culture, can occur in food, in architecture, and in clothing. Taking cues from the past, something new and exciting is created.

We have taken two cultures and brought forth the best of each.  Bone china, dating from the late Eighteenth Century, is a strong and beautiful medium.  It has been prized for its purity and ability to capture detail, and it is one of the most difficult of all ceramics to produce. In the West, earthenware pottery is often decorated with underglazes, and a glaze applied over it. This gives rich colors that seem to be lit from within. We have formed a company that reaches across two continents, and across these traditional styles, to bring you horses that are a fusion, showcasing the soft and luminous underglazes of earthenware, over the strong and detailed bone china.

Using the most sought after artists, and giving them the ability to sculpt in the finest detail possible, the finished products are some of the most outstanding ceramic horses ever produced. We look forward to offering a very limited number of these pieces a few times each year. Spanning centuries, traversing distance, and blending the best of the best, we proudly present Marcher Ware.

Marcher Ware - what the blending of traditions can create.
